The Building Research Establishment (BRE) is a former UK government establishment that carries out research, consultancy and testing for the construction and built environment sectors in the United Kingdom. 

The BRE Certification Scheme ensures that the work of the Home Inspectors can be trusted by sellers, buyers and lenders alike, including:

• Ensures that all inspectors are 'fit and proper' people.
• Checks the background of inspectors, including carrying out a Criminal Records Bureau check.
• Ensures that the inspectors are qualified to carry out their duties.
• Ensures that the inspectors have adequate indemnity cover to deal with any claims that might arise.
• Checks the quality of the work produced by inspectors and ensures that there are no drops in standards.
• Has the power to suspend and/or cancel the membership of any inspecctors whose work falls below acceptable standards, or who does not adhere to a strict code of conduct.
• Ensures that there are proper procedures in place for complaints and redress.
• Keeps a public register of their members.
